Virtual Town Hall 2.0: Refining the Strategic Plan and Setting Goals for the Future
Friday, June 19, 2020, 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM CDT
Category: Events

Hello Iowa Psychologists!

Thank you for your interest in planning for the future of Psychology in Iowa and participating in the event titled “Virtual Town Hall 2.0: Refining the Strategic Plan and Setting Goals for the Future.” As part of the event we are also providing two FREE ethics CE’s in an event titled “COVID-19’s Impact on Legal and Regulatory Practice Issues.”

This Zoom event will be a follow-up to the first Virtual Town Hall meeting that we had in November of 2019. The focus of the Virtual Town Hall 2.0 event will be on creating action items based on key topics identified during the last Virtual Town Hall meeting.

The data we collect from this event will be used to guide specific, measurable, timely objectives, and then create a plan for meeting those objectives over time. This process does not replace the existing Strategic Plan but is a way to “check in” on it, add to it, and modify and improve it where needed.

For the Virtual Town Hall meeting attendees will participate in one of nine breakout groups to discuss key issues that Iowa psychologists face, brainstorm ideas, and generate action items to address these issues. Each workgroup will be facilitated by a member of IPA leadership and a note-taker will be selected to document all of the ideas generated from the session. The goal for each group is to come up with at least three specific recommendations or “action items” to address issues in each group. At the conclusion of the session (if time remains) each workgroup will share at least one recommendation or action item with the larger Zoom group.

Please select one of the workgroups below when you register via Zoom.

1. Improving access to mental health care for Iowans

  • How can psychologists improve access to mental health services in Iowa?
  • How can IPA promote telepsychology services in Iowa?
2. Promoting the value or uniqueness of psychology
  • What are steps that psychologists can take to differentiate themselves from other providers?
  • How can psychologists facilitate an understanding of what they do to the general public and other entities (e.g., insurance companies)?
3. Training Psychologists and Engaging Students
  • How can IPA continue to foster and develop additional training opportunities for all levels of psychology trainees (e.g., undergraduate; pre-doctoral internship; post-doctoral fellowship)?
4. Business of Psychology
  • How can psychologists have a “seat at the table” and advocate for the needs of psychologists, including reimbursement for various services (e.g., individual, group, assessment).
5. Value of IPA Membership
  • How does IPA demonstrate and communicate the “value” of an IPA membership?
  • How can we improve the diversity of IPA and recruit new members to IPA?
6. Building connections, community, and engaging psychologists in Iowa
  • How can IPA recruit more psychologists, including early career psychologists, to participate in leadership positions, committees, and activities that promote planning for the future of psychology in Iowa?
  • How can IPA enhance connections with other professionals and mental health organizations across Iowa?
  • How can psychologists centralize resources and create a sense of community?
7. Practice in Iowa
  • How do we recruit and retain psychologists to live and practice in Iowa?
  • What steps can IPA take to increase the number of student who may stay and practice in Iowa following their graduate training?
8. Prescriptive authority for psychologists in Iowa
  • What are the biggest barriers facing RxP in Iowa and how can these barriers be addressed?
  • How can psychologists continue to advocate for RxP in Iowa?
9. Non-IPA Members
  • What resources are non-IPA members looking for in a professional association?
  • What would be most valuable to you when thinking about joining IPA?

10. I do not plan on participating in the strategic planning session but I would like to attend the CE session.

COVID-19’s Impact on Legal and Regulatory Practice Issues

Presenters: Katie Cownie, Adam Freed, and Mike Jenkins – Attorneys at BrownWinick

COVID-19 has had a profound impact on the way that mental health professionals provide patient care and operate their businesses. Practice changes happened quickly and were governed by a patchwork of emergency rules, proclamations, and waivers. In this presentation three healthcare attorneys from BrownWinick will help map out where we are from a legal and regulatory standpoint, where we might be headed, and what providers can do to adapt and thrive in this changing landscape. The presentation will focus on three areas of interest: Telehealth, Practicing Across State Lines, and Reimbursement.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide a basic understanding of the legal and regulatory framework for the provision of telehealth delivered mental health services in Iowa
  • Gain an awareness of the issues that face mental health professionals as they provide care for patients that may be located in other states
  • Learn about emerging issues related to reimbursement for services that are rendered in contexts other than traditional face-to-face settings

Katie Cownie is the Co-Chair of the BrownWinick Health Law Practice Group. She helps her clients work through their problems in a productive and efficient manner.
