About This Workshop

Dilemmas in Ethical Practice and Strategies for Decision Making (3 hours)

This  workshop will present an overview of the various ethical dilemmas and challenges faced by psychologists in their clinical work.  Available data of vulnerable areas for practitioners will be provided to increase practitioner's awareness, including from the Insurance Trust regarding primary allegations in losses; the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) summary of reported disciplinary actions for psychologists by licensing boards; and the American Psychological Association Ethics Office summary of number and types of complaints.  Strategies to prevent violations will be reviewed, including basic tasks for professional ethics, moral principles that underlie the Ethics Code standards, and information from various guidelines. A model for resolving ethical dilemmas will be provided as foundation for developing an ethical orientation to aid in ethical decision making. An update on the revision of the APA Ethics Code will be provided.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. Be able to identify three of the five general principles that underlie all APA Ethics Code Standards
  2. List three areas of vulnerable areas for practitioners
  3. Identify three key steps in ethical decision making

Multicultural Competence in a Changing World:  An Ethical Imperative (3 hours)

The changing demographics of this country may serve to widen the existing gaps of mental health providers to provide culturally competent services. Cultural competence includes the understanding how culture influences the experiences of distress, dysfunction, strength and resilience. The purpose of this talk is to provide an evidence-based analysis of how one may develop culturally appropriate skills, knowledge and attitudes. A review of evidence-based analysis will be provided of how providers may unintentionally interfere with development of quality alliances with those different from them, and how this may contribute to barriers to effective culturally competent services. Strategies to reduce bias and enhance effectiveness will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. recognize APA Ethics Code standards relevant to diverse populations.
  2. be able to list two potential obstacles to providing competent services for members of diverse populations
  3. be able to identify two positive strategies based on multicultural and feminist ethics for increase in competency for delivery of services to diverse groups.
