About This Workshop

Class Description: This class provides students with a review of those aspects of chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. Which is foundational content required for the study of and competencies within pharmacology. In general chemistry, the concepts of chemical compounds and bonds, and atomic theory will be reviewed. In organic chemistry, the concepts of organic compounds, bonds and valences will be reviewed. In biochemistry, biomolecules of proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids, as well as chromosomal theory and the genetic code, enzymes and metabolism will be covered. This training modules will review and update student's understanding of critical principles in biochemistry, including: chemical compounds and bonds (covalent, ionic, hydrophilic/hydrophobic, hydrogen bonds); atomic theory; organic compounds, bonds and valences; biomolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids); enzymes and metabolism; transport processes in neurons; and biochemical mechanisms of neuronal signaling.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. List 3 components of an atom.
  2. List 2 major types of atomic bonds.
  3. List at least 1 structural and 1 stereo isomers of simple carbon compounds.
  4. List 3 common chemical functional groups.
  5. List 4 at least different types of amino acids, as related to monomeric components of proteins.
  6. List 2 monomeric components of lipids.
  7. List 3 components of nucleotides, as the monomeric components of nucleic acids.
  8. Identify at least 3 types of simple sugars, as the monomeric components of carbohydrates.
  9. Name 2 types of bonds that link monomers of proteins and carbohydrates.
  10. Identify and label the high-level structure of DNA: a double helix of antiparallel strands of nucleic acids linked by phosphodiester bonds, held together by hydrogen bonds between the strands.
  11. List 2 types of pairing of bases in a DNA molecule.
  12. List at least 4 cellular organelles and their functions.
  13. List the 3 steps of the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology.
  14. Articulate the 3 processes of Transcription: as the encoding of a gene sequence from DNA to mRNA and identify that it occurs in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
  15. Explain the 3 processes of Translation: as the conversion of an mRNA sequence into a polypeptide (protein) sequence, occurring in the ribosomes.
  16. Identify complementary physical interaction surfaces as the basis for the "lock and key" model of enzyme-substrate recognition.
  17. List the 3 major categories of enzymatic inhibition.
  18. List at least 3 functions of enzymes, and at least 1 condition that must be met for a function of an enzyme to occur.
  19. List at least 2 type of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs).
  20. Concerning GPCRs, list the ideal primary target percentage of modern medicinal drugs.
