Mental Health Advocates and Law Enforcement (1.5 Hours)

Julie Saxton has been in the social services industry for over 15 years and currently serves as the mental health advocate for the Ames Police Department advocating for those who struggle with mental health and substance abuse. Julie has been with the department for 6 years and prior to this was an in-home mental health counselor and supervisor for Lifeline Resources. Julie worked with children ages 3-17 to help them understand their diagnosis and work on coping, communication, and attentiveness skills as well as support and educate parents to be an advocate for their child. Julie is a board member for Good Neighbor and connected with various committees to help break the stigma around mental health and bring awareness to a topic that needs a voice.  Julie also teaches mental health first aid with Kinsey Phillips, the mental health advocate with Iowa State University.  

Julie’s role with the Ames Police Department is to connect individuals in our community who are suffering from mental health or substance abuse issues with the appropriate resources to help them move towards recovery. Julie is also a support for families and loved ones of those who may be suffering from mental illness or substance abuse assists in navigating the system, provides resources for support and education as well as an ear to just listen. Julie works with over 80 providers in Ames and Story County and collaborates with the Ames Community School District, faith based organizations, Story County Attorney’s office as well as many private clinicians to make sure our community is supported, given an opportunity to see that there is hope and recovery is possible. Julie is also the host of a radio program, Insight of the Mind, on KHOI 89.1FM airing on the second and third Saturday of each month. This radio program helps you keep pivoting towards mental health during these most challenging of times and brings awareness, breaks down the stigma associated with mental health as well as provides resources for listeners in central Iowa who may be struggling with mental illness.

About This Workshop

Overview of the role a mental health advocate plays in our communities and how they can help bridge the gap.


Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. How the MHA works alongside law enforcement to assist those struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues
  2. How the MHA connects our most vulnerable to community resources
  3. The importance of community collaboration to bridge the gap
  4. How the MHA can help reduce recidivism and provide short and long term support to those suffering, family members, friends and providers
  5. Understanding of the unique role of an MHA and information sharing

IPA will offer a full refund to registrants who cancel their registration 7 days prior to an event/course. If a registrant would like to cancel their registration within 7 days of the event, no refund will be offered.
