About This Workshop

Class Description: This training module covers physiological concepts underlying central and peripheral nervous system function. Cellular neurophysiology concepts such as the resting potential, action potential and basic ion channel kinetics will be reviewed, as will neurotransmitter receptor function. Second messengers and neural plasticity are also studied in depth. Finally, the student/attendee will be exposed to nervous system pathology.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
1.    List 3 types of neurons
2.    List at least 5 structures of a neuron
3.    List at least 3 components of the neuronal membrane
4.    List at least 2 differences and/or features between a resting vs. action potential
5.    List 4 characteristics of a neurotransmitter
6.    List 6 types of inotropic receptors and 1 type of metabotropic receptor
7.    List at least 2 characteristics of an Excitatory Postsynaptic Potential (EPSP), and 1 neurotransmitter involved in generating the potential
8.    List at least 2 characteristics of an Inhibitory Postsynaptic Potential (IPSP), and 1 neurotransmitter involved in generating the potential
9.    Regarding major neurotransmitter systems, identify the (a) location of synthesis, (b) its major projection areas, and (c) receptor subtypes of the:
a.    Cholinergic System
b.    Dopaminergic System
c.    Noradrenergic System
d.    Serotonergic System
e.    Glutamatergic System
f.    GABAergic System
10.    List 2 divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
11.    List at least 3 target organ systems within each division (sympathetic vs. parasympathetic) of the ANS
12.    Identify and distinguish between 3 types of neurodegenerative diseases
13.    List two types of vascular disorders
14.    Identify at least 3 signs of tardive dyskinesia and 2 underlying mechanisms involved
15.    List at least 3 signs of Neuroleptic Malignancy Syndrome
16.    List at least 3 signs of Serotonin Syndrome
17.    List at least 3 symptoms of serotonin discontinuation syndrome
18.    Identify the difference between acute and chronic pain and the mechanisms/functions of each
a.    Including listing at least 3 proposed mechanism of the Gate Control Theory of Pain
19.    List 2 significant features of acute pain
20.    List 3 significant features of chronic pain
21.    List at least 3 types of neuroimaging diagnostic/modalities, 3 indications for imaging, and at least 1 process on how to order imaging studies

Upon completion of the training, NMSU will email registrants the training evaluation. Upon completion of the training evaluation, the NMSU will email the registrant the CE certificate.
