About This Workshop

Class Description: This is a thorough study of gross anatomy and micro-anatomy of the brain. The structural anatomy of the cerebral cortex and sub cortex will be discussed in regards to the ways in which these structures interact with psychopharmacological agents. Special focus will be given to the structural aspects of the frontal cortex, hippocampus, basal ganglia, thalamus and hypothalamus with particular attention to the locus coeruleus, dorsal raphe nuclei and the nucleus accumbens. A sheep brain dissection will be demonstrated.


Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
1. List 3 major structures of the brain
2. List 3 types of brain sections/views
3. Locate and list 1 function of the Blood Brain Barrier
4. Locate 4 lobes of the cerebrum
5. List at least 1 function of each lobe
6. List 4 ventricles in the brain
7. List 4 structures of the cortex
8. List 3 layers of the Meninges
9. Locate and list 1 function the corpus colosseum
10. Identify the two main commissures and which orientation they are best visualized in
11. Trace the outline of Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF), then list 1 function of CSF.
12. List 2 areas/types of blood supplies in the brain
13. Locate and list 1 function frontal cortex
14. Locate and list 1 function hippocampus
15. Locate and list 1 function basal ganglia
16. Locate and list 1 function thalamus
17. Locate and list 1 function hypothalamus
18. Locate and list 1 function locus coeruleus
19. Locate and list 1 function dorsal raphe nuclei
