About This Workshop

This class will continue our study of psychopharmacological considerations and treatment in special populations and environments. Psychopharmacology of the Medically Ill, and Pain Disorders covers the responsibilities of prescribers to seek information and consultation when their patient has a co-occurring medical disorder. Prescribing psychologists’ roles and liabilities in co-managing complex disorders are illustrated with extensive case studies. Whether working
elbow-to-elbow with medical providers in integrated healthcare, or via other methods of consulting, participants will learn how to best serve their patients who have complex needs.


Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. List five neurophysiological aspects that differentiates acute from chronic pain.
  2. List at least three (DSM 5) categories of Somatic Symptom Disorders; and two roles of the prescribing or consulting psychologist in co-managing Somatic Symptom Disorders.
  3. List four medications commonly used for the improvement of fibromyalgia symptoms and one non-medication biological strategy.
  4. Identify two labeled indications for gabapentin and three off-label frequent usages of this medication.
  5. List and describe four medication classes of non-opioid management of pain.
  6. Identify two mechanisms of action of pain management medications; and two drug-drug interactions with psychotropic medication.
  7. List three cognitive-behavioral techniques for pain management, two mindfulness techniques, and one neuropsychological imagery technique for reducing pain sensations.
  8. List at least two strategies to balance between managing pain and minimizing addiction that a psychologist can use when consulting with physicians of their patients.
  9. List at least four steps to assist in co-managing the minimization of addiction, psychosocially and medically.
  10. Identify at least two risks of diversion of pain medications.
  11. List three ways that medical cannabis for pain management impact health care systems and providers.
  12. Identify two ethical dilemmas when working patients with pain and co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
  13. List at least three challenges faced when working with patients on long term use of both opioid pain medications and benzodiazepines.
  14. Identify at least three key points when discussing dependency to prescription opioids with patients.
  15. Engage in three case studies integrating major medical illness, pain management, psychotropics, psychotherapy.
  16. List five chronic medical illnesses that are frequently seen with patients who struggle with a cooccurring mental disorders.
  17. List at least 5 psychiatric symptoms as the result of General Medical Conditions’ list one useful mnemonic device to recall common symptoms.
  18. List two electronic applications to assess drug interactions when treating chronically ill patients with psychotropics.
  19. Regarding elderly patients, list four aspects of the Beers Criteria.
  20. List three respiratory disorders and one psychotropic medication cautions associated with each.
  21. Explain immune-inflammatory processes and how this may be related to tryptophan and serotonin availability.
  22. List three psychotherapeutic strategies for improving the health behaviors of individuals with co-occurring psychiatric disorder and major medical illness.
