About This Workshop

Day 1: Immunology

Training Description: The mechanisms of biological self-defense and pathophysiology of the immune system are studied in depth. Immune function and psycho-immunology are reviewed.
Exposure to basic methods and understanding of laboratory assessment, particularly within this System, will also be a focus of this course.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the training, students will be able to:
1.    State the first and second lines of defense that make up innate immunity.
2.    Describe 2 differences between innate and adaptive immunity.
3.    List 3 different types of cells that are involved in the inflammatory process of the innate immune response and explain their primary function.
4.    List the 2 different types of lymphoctyes that mediate the adaptive immune response and the 2 types of antigens they provide protection against.
5.    Explain the processes of “generation of clonal diversity” and “clonal selection” for T and B cells, including the primary and secondary lymphoid organs.
6.    Describe 4 inappropriate immune responses.
7.    Determine whether a patient has a Type I, II, II, or IV hypersensitivity reaction based on the clinical symptoms and history.
8.    Explain at least 2 mechanisms for which active and passive immunity are achieved.
9.    Recognize at least 2 microorganisms in each of the following: bacteria, fungi, virus, and protozoa.
10.    Describe the mechanism by which the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) affects the immune system.
11.    In response to a stressor, explain at least 1 effect of each of these: norepinephrine, epinephrine, and cortisol.

Day 2: Endocrine/Exocrine Systems

Training Description: This module focuses on Endocrine/Exocrine Systems. The endocrine system is studied as it influences and controls many aspects of the overall physiology of the body and is also a locus for adverse effects of many drugs, including psychotropic drugs.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the training, students will be able to:
1.    Explain 1 difference between the endocrine and exocrine systems.
2.    Describe at least 4 characteristics or features of hormones: which endocrine glands they are synthesized and release from, their target organs, and physiologic effects.
3.    Describe at least 2 pathophysiological mechanisms related to dysfunctions in the endocrine and exocrine systems.
4.    Interpret at least 2 assessment findings for the endocrine and exocrine systems logically based on an understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms.
5.    Apply analytic reasoning and problem solving to at least 3 patient cases involving the endocrine system.
6.    Describe at least 1 blood test that is a marker for thyroid disease.
7.    Describe at least 1 blood test that is a marker for diabetes mellitus.
8.    Describe at least 3 medication causes of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) secretion and 1 medication cause of diabetes insipidus.
