Following the Breadcrumbs: The Basics of Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment and How It Can Enhance Clinical Practice

Dr. Krista Brittain is a Licensed Psychologist in private practice in West Des Moines, Iowa. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa (BA) and the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology (MA, PsyD). Following her internship at the University of Missouri- Kansas City she completed postdoctoral and early career work at Trinity Hospital and Clinics in Minot, ND before returning to her home state and entering private practice in the Des Moines area in 2011. At present, Dr. Brittain specializes in assessment, utilizing Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment approach. She is Level 1 certified in Therapeutic Assessment and is currently in the Level 2 Certification process. Aside from assessment, Dr. Brittain collaborates with schools to advocate for neurodivergent individuals in the learning environment, consults and presents on the topic of billing insurance for assessment, and maintains a small caseload of therapy clients. Outside of the office, Dr. Brittain is delighted to spend time with her partner, daughter, family, and friends. She especially enjoys travel, the arts, yoga, gluten free food, and the great outdoors. Dr. Brittain is thrilled to have this opportunity to share about Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment with Iowa Psychologists!

About This Workshop

This interactive workshop will provide an introduction to Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment, including brief history, description, and comparison with traditional assessment models. Through presentation, interactive discussion, and experiential practice, participants will also apply parts of the model to clinical practice. The workshop will provide opportunities to explore the many applications of C/TA in multiple settings, such as adult assessments, working with parents during child and adolescent assessments, and the treacherous territory of assessing prospective and current therapy clients.

Attendees must complete the course in full and attend all sessions (9am - 4:30pm CST) in order to receive ANY continuing education credit. No partial credit will be given.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. Identify three (3) of the five (5) core values of Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment (C/TA)
  2. Identify two (2) differences between C/TA and traditional assessment
  3. Identify one (1) type of case for which C/TA would be appropriate and one (1) type of case for which C/TA would not be appropriate
  4. Identify and generally describe the main steps of the adult C/TA process
  5. Discuss two (2) examples of how C/TA can be well-suited to address diversity and client experiences of oppression in the assessment process
  6. Become familiar with several applications of C/TA, including (at least) one (1) that may be applicable to your clinical practice
