About This Workshop

This comprehensive training module introduces essential concepts in molecular nutrition and its relevance to psychopharmacology. There is a review of major nutrient classes (amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals, trace minerals, enzymes) and genetic influences in the metabolism of specific nutrients relevant to psychiatric disorders (folic acid, lipids, glucose). The trainees will receive a list of major botanicals and their pharmacological properties. An overview of the central nervous and digestive system connection will enhance trainees understanding of nutritional substrates and drug metabolism.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
1. Name 4 nutrient classes, and describe their relation to mental/emotional conditions
2. Differentiate 5 clinical signs of nutrient deficiencies
3. Explain 1 foundational feature of human physiology related to nutrition; e.g., healthy pH balance (6.5-7.5) versus an abnormal one (< .65 too acid, or > 7.5 too alkaline)
4. Categorize 2 major botanical classes relevant to mental health; i.e., adaptogens, nootropics
5. Identify 2 herbal detoxifiers with clinical examples; e.g. milk thistle, dandelion.
6. Identify 1 key difference between nutritional and pharmacological lithium
7. List 6 key drug-nutrient interactions
8. Label 3 key drug-herb interactions
9. Reference 2 evidence-based diets that promote mental health
10. Recommend at least 3 nutritional herbal remedies or over the counter supplements for weight gain and metabolic imbalances triggered by certain psychotropic drugs
11. Formulate at least 1 template for personalized nutrition, for each stage in the life cycle
12. Identify at least 3 biomarkers in patients' medical information pointing to their nutritional deficits
13. Highlight at least 3 basic recommendations for safe supplementation with vitamins, minerals & herbs to support mental well-being and safe prescribing
14. Perform 1 basic dietary assessment
15. Discuss 1 basic assessment of psychotropic medication effects on a patient's nutrient status
16. Cover at least 2 reasons for referrals to a nutritionist, naturopath, or physician, based on the patient's nutritional status
